As the red carpet is laid out and the champagne uncorked for the IFTA awards this Sunday, all Gaiety School of Acting eyes will be on the ceremony and fingers firmly crossed for our many past pupils who are nominated across the board.

Rapidly approaching its 30th year in the business of training actors, The Gaiety School of Acting is renowned for excellence in its field; producing a whole host of acclaimed actors that have made waves on the national and international film and theatre scene.

With the announcement of the IFTA nominees, our attention has temporarily shifted from current man of the moment 2004 alumnus Aidan Turner, to our myriad other talented past students.  While Aidan’s been scything up a storm in BBC period drama Poldark, no less than seven Gaiety School graduates have popped up in IFTA categories across the board.

Ignition Films’ Patrick’s Day has received a lot of attention and is not only nominated for Best Film but has also secured Gaiety School graduates Moe Dunford and Catherine Walker the nominations of Best Actor in a Lead Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role respectively.

Battling against Walker in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category is another Gaiety School alumnus, Sarah Greene.  Sarah’s turn as young Christina Noble in the biopic Noble has already wooed the critics and now, the purveyors of awards.  Greene has also been nominated for the much sought after Rising Star Award, in which category she competes against three other up and coming actors, including fellow Gaiety graduate Moe Dunford.

The last of the Gaiety School “head to heads” in the IFTAs comes in the Lead Role categories for both actor and actress, in which the aforementioned Dunford is pitted against Colin Farrell for his part in Miss Julie, while Deirdre O’Kane is nominated for Noble against Simone Kirby for her role in Jimmy’s Hall.

With our alumni appearing throughout the film categories, what of the TV?  Not to worry, Charlie Murphy is holding up the fort on that front with a double nomination – for Actress in a Lead Role in Drama for Love/Hate and Actress in a Supporting Role in Drama for period series The Village.

Haven’t they done well! We’ll be glued to the screen on May 24th hoping for a wonderful outcome for all our fantastic graduates.
