Gaiety School of Acting Graduates dominate this year’s Irish Times Theatre Award Nominations

Irish Times Theatre AwardsThe Gaiety School of Acting – The National Theatre School of Ireland is delighted to have a host of our graduates nominated for a variety of categories at this year’s Irish Times Theatre Awards 2014. 

Veteran actress Aisling O’Sullivan (Class of 1991) for BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS again this year for her role as Dolly in ‘Bailegangaire’, by Tom Murphy, directed by Garry Hynes for Druid Theatre, Galway.

In the same category BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, we are delighted to welcome the nomination of recent graduate – the talented Kate Gilmore (Class of 2013) – for her role in Breathless, by John MacKenna, directed by Iseult Golden for Orion Productions and Danú Theatre.

Iseult Golden (Class of 1996) also studied at the school in the 1990s and this award is also a nod to her skills as a director. It is wonderful to see the array of skills and talents of our graduates being recognised in the various categories. Kate Gilmore also starred in the one-woman performance of Petals by Gillian Greer at the Theatre Upstairs which has been nominated as BEST NEW PLAY.

Ian Toner, also Class of 2013, has been nominated for a BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR award for his role as Bennett in ‘Punk Rock’, by Simon Stephens, for the Lyric Theatre, Belfast.

The Abbey Theatre’s, Our Few and Evil Days, by Mark O’Rowe, is among the most nominated productions with six nominations this year BEST PRODUCTION, BEST ACTRESS, BEST ACTOR, BEST NEW PLAY, BEST COSTUME DESIGN and  BEST SET DESIGN. This is a wonderful triumph for GSA Graduates, Charlie Murphy (Class of 2008) and Ian Lloyd Anderson (Class of 2007) who make up part of the stellar cast which made the show the success that it was! 

Ian Lloyd Anderson also played the role of Liam Scuab in ‘Sive’ by John B Keane whose director Conall Morrison is up for a BEST DIRECTOR award this year. Conall’s other production ‘She Stoops to Conquer’ by Oliver Goldsmith at the Abbey Theatre this year, also featured graduate Rory Nolan (Class of 2003) as ‘Hastings’. 

Dreamland by Jim Nolan for Garter Lane, Everyman and Project Arts Centre is up for BEST NEW PLAY and starred new talent GSA Grad Conall Keating (Class of 2013) and Karl Shiels (Class of 1995). 

And it is not just for their acting abilities our graduates have been nominated. We are delighted to see Carl Kennedy (Class of 2004) nominated for BEST SOUND DESIGN for Mr Foley the Radio Operator, by Frances Kay for Theatre Lovett. 

Once again, our alumni continue to make us proud and these nominations are a testament to the quality and success of our Professional Actor Training Programme. The Awards ceremony take place on 22nd February 2015 at the National Concert Hall, Dublin.
