INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH – REX RYAN

Rex Ryan graduated from the Gaiety School of Acting in 2013. He is currently starring as Derry in ‘Cornerstones’ showing at Smock Alley Theatre from 7th -19th April 2014.  Although only a recent graduate, Rex’s theatre credits already include The Park (Monkey Backstage) The Circus of Perseverance (The Gonzo Theatre), The Birthday Man (for which he was a Best actor nominee, Fringe Fest 13′,  at The Gonzo Theatre), Town and Country (by Gary Duggan, Smock Alley Theatre), The Ballad Of Brian Burke (Come As You Art), Shyboy and The Melted Angel (Rise productions radio play), The Boyz of Harcourt Street (Three men and a Baby), Trepanation by Abbie Spallen (Abbey Theatre – 24 hour plays). Film credits include This Club-Up (Music video), Anna (Viko Nikci short) and The Birthday Man (Phillip Doherty/Padraig Conaty). Rex is a co-founder of Monkey Backstage Theatre Company. 

 

1. Did you always want to work in the film/acting business?

No

2. How did you start off in the business?

I was in Youth Theatre when I was younger, then I began acting classes again after college before applying to Gaiety. 

3. Any tips for aspiring actors/film makers?

Give me a couple years and I’ll get back to you. 

4. What did you like most about being at The Gaiety School of Acting?

I happened to be in a year that had a lot of talented actors in it, so I learned a lot from them. We all pushed each other. 

5. Favourite actor?

Brando, in A Streetcar Named Desire, to name one of many. 

6. Favourite writer? Playwright?

Would be Tom Murphy. Enda Walsh also. 

7. Favourite film?

Very hard to choose one- Recently, I thought 12 Years A Slave was outstanding. 

8. Who has been the most influential person in your life so far?

Mum and Dad. 

9. Earliest memory?

Eating cabbage and bacon. 

10. What would be your idea of the perfect day?

Time with the family. A chipper then the cinema.
