The Full Moon Hotel

“We’re in limboland… we’re stuck…afraid to reverse our mind-numbing day-in-day-out routine in case we might rock the boat… I say if there is a boat lets rock it…”

What havoc will be unleashed, when a supernatural presence is disturbed at an Irish hotel under the eerie glow of a full moon?
Philip Doherty’s black comedy introduces us to a colourful tapestry of characters stemming from every tier of society, each of them destined to get more than they bargained for when the sun goes down. Ill-advisedly built on an ancient fairy fort, mythological forces rise within the hotel and, over the course of the play, seek revenge for such blatant sacrilege by granting the hotel guests that which the Irish most deeply fear: The impulse for adventure, to take action, to stand up for themselves. As these characters interweave towards a haunting climax, their blackly comic stories expose us to modern taboos which we are forced to examine from the varying perspectives of the guests, the hotel staff and the lingering presence of the other-world. By the time the sun rises all characters reach their own epiphany in this sweeping allegorical tale of Ireland today.

This original piece of theatre has been commissioned by The Gaiety School of Acting – The National Theatre School of Ireland – for their Class of 2015 Graduation Play. Written by playwright and director Philip Doherty, Two-time winner of the RTE PJ O’Connor radio drama Award, The Full Moon Hotel will be the first professional production staged by the 2015 graduates of the Full-time Intensive Actor Training Course. With previous students of the course including Charlie Murphy, Aidan Turner, Sarah Greene, Eva Birthistle and Colin Farrell, this could be a unique opportunity to see the next star of stage and screen before their big break.
The Gaiety School of Acting is unique in that it is the only acting school in the country with a tradition of commissioning plays for Graduating Students. This will be the school’s 39th original piece of theatre for graduates since 1988.

Check in at The Full Moon Hotel from 23rd to the 28th of June 2015 at 7.30pm.
