FINAL rtb_10 x6.66 insLiz Fitzgibbon graduated from The Gaiety School two year actor training programme in 2007 and is appearing in this year’s Tiger Dublin Fringe in Orla Murphy’s Remember to Breathe.  We asked Liz a few questions about the play, which runs at Smock Alley, Boys School from September 7th to 12th.

Can you tell us a little about your role in the play?

I play Maeve, the title character in the play.  She takes you through her journey of learning to swim and along the way you discover her reasons for not learning before. You get to see her face her fear and how that helps heal open wounds

The play is set in post-earthquake Christchurch. How does this impact on the narrative? Do you feel like disaster is a good catalyst for drama?

It being set in Christchurch gives it a sense of urgency and pace. The aftershocks were vicious and are a part of everyday life there now.  Yes, I do I think in times of disaster people feel the value of life, but also the fragility of life more, and in turn you’re forced to face fears you might have chosen not to.

Maeve is afraid of water – do you have any phobias yourself that you were able to call on for inspiration?

I actually love the water. I grew up by the sea and i’m a water baby. I don’t really have any phobias but I identify with Maeve in many other ways.

Who do you think this play would appeal to?

I think it would appeal to a wide audience but especially young adults who have travelled and worked abroad, and all the fears and fun that comes with it.
