Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy!
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on
(Othello, Act 3, scene 3)
It is with great pleasure that we announce the last leg of our Shakespeare Schools Programme for 2014/2015. After a very successful nationwide tour, we are delighted to bring these amazing plays to Dublin’s oldest, newest theatre – Smock Alley Theatre-1662. With the continuing support of examsupport.ie, who have supplied each student with their very own bespoke workbook designed specifically to address the Shakespeare Question on the English Examination Paper 2015, we hope to continue the success created from our tour.
Our productions are two of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, Othello and Romeo & Juliet. Othello is a fascinating play, not just for its superb writing, but also because the audience experience’s the action in such a complicit manner. Iago, one of Shakespeare’s greatest villains, takes us so deeply into his confidence, explains his rationale, and then sets about a course of villainous actions that we are made aware of before the victims experience them. And then Romeo & Juliet, two star-crossed lovers, is a play that is structured around opposites, contradictions and contrasts at every level.
Both plays are full of humour, intrigue, conflict, love and, of course, tragedy and we endeavour to excite, frighten and transport you into the world of ‘the Bard’.
New for 2015, we are also running a special programme for Primary Schools. Specifically tailored to introduce younger children to the wonderful world of Shakespeare, long before they enter Post Primary School, our Shakespeare Primary Schools Programme includes a short play based on Shakespeare text,
with a post performance session focusing on creating and designing your own version of the play with the opportunity to interact with the cast and crew, and learn about acting, directing, lighting and much more.
Experience an abridged version of a Shakespeare play, approx 40mins, all in Dublin’s oldest & newest theatre, Smock Alley Theatre. Explore the workings of a real theatre by visiting backstage, meeting the actors, director and tech team. This Programme endeavours to be a fun and engaging first experience of Shakespeare that students will never forget.
This unique opportunity is open to all Primary School students during the school day.
