The Gaiety School of Acting – The National Theatre School of Ireland – have tailored two courses to suit the Croke Park hours requirements of Post Primary Schools. With the current focus on emotional health, schools are seeking ways to build resilience and combat bullying.
“In Their Shoes” is an anti bullying, drama based course for teachers in order to foster an understanding of how active learning strategies can improve the classroom atmosphere. Teachers will be encouraged to participate in the activities so they will be able to experience and understand the power of drama techniques which often are key elements in exploring different forms of bullying among their students. During the course the range and quality of a variety of drama strategies will be explored. There will be many opportunities to explore story elements, creative expression, focus and concentration. This course will enhance the curriculum and bring about an improvement in the social and emotional lives of the students.
The “Breathe” programme is promoting positive mental health one breath at a time. It is an early prevention programme combating the ever increasing suicide trend among young people. It was developed to raise awareness around well-being and positive mental health for our youth. It will teach how to improve the social and emotional lives of students. Teachers will learn how to keep this project alive through the school community long after the workshops have finished. They will be encouraged to integrate the acquired knowledge into the classroom, through subjects like Religion, SPHE, CSPE etc. Each teacher will be given a hand-out with guidelines on how to assist the students in becoming emotionally literate.
These sessions can be run throughout the academic year and delivered in your school or at The Gaiety School of Acting.
