5 Reasons to do an Acting Class that have nothing to do with Acting

New Friends, Confidence Building, Improve your English…

A lot of students at the Gaiety School of Acting have always dreamed about being in the limelight. Some of our students are crazy about theatre and others are complete film fanatics. However, it may surprise you to learn that a large proportion of students taking short courses at GSA do so for reasons that have very little to do with acting. So here are the top FIVE reasons some of our students sign up to acting classes that have NOTHING to do with acting…

To Meet New PeopleConfidence Edge

You’re forced to chat to each other, you will meet people from all walks of life, and the drama games act as natural icebreakers; there are many reasons why people join an acting class to meet new people. Inevitably at the end of every term, new friendships are formed, and dare we say it, occasionally even more than friendships!

To Excel in the Workplace

Did you know that a lot of recruiters will take note if you have an acting class on your CV? This is because it may indicate that you have a good level of confidence, are comfortable mixing with people, and have a well of creativity that can be applied to the organisation’s endeavours.

To Improve their English

A large percentage of people taking short courses at GSA are new to the country. Not only do they join up to meet new people (see reason number one above!), but the script work, improvisation and fun non-pressurised environment make acting classes an excellent place to improve on your English.

To Overcome a Fear of Public Speaking

The two greatest fears in the world are Death and Public Speaking. You can’t really overcome the former, unless you manage to get in with some vampires, but you CAN build your confidence while public speaking. So if work presentations or wedding speeches, even talking on the phone, keep you up at night – an acting class is the place to overcome that fear.

To Support a Friend

Brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, best friends – we welcome lots of “acting class wingmen” through the door. Most of the time, even though they are merely attending to support their pal, the wingman will fall in love with GSA and often branch out on their own for term two! Sometimes friends or partners sign up as a bonding experience and make a whole night out of their trip to Temple Bar.
