Sorcha Furlong launches Autumn Programme at The Gaiety School of Acting

Fair-City Actress Sorcha Furlong was on hand with actors Marnie McCleane, Stephen O’Leary, Dave Rowe and GSA Director, Patrick Sutton to launch the Autumn/Spring 2014/15 programme at our HQ in Temple Bar this morning, Sorcha, who plays Orla Kirwan, in the popular RTE series ‘Fair City’, completed an evening courses at the school when she was younger and is re-visiting her roots.

The Autumn/Spring 2014/15 programme offers an exciting range of new courses for both Adults and Children. There is a large selection part-time evening courses for Adults at the school’s HQ in Essex Street West, Temple Bar and at The Granary Theatre in Cork.

New and exciting Adult courses on offer in Temple Bar include:

Radio Presentation The first blended-learning Radio Presentation course in Ireland. This course will take place on Wednesday evenings for 10 weeks and will be presented by experienced radio professionals Daryl Moorhouse (TinPot Productions), Jonathan Healy (Newstalk) and Colm O’Sullivan (Today FM) with Ruth Scott (2FM) as a guest lecturer. There is also a chance to win an internship with NEWSTALK.

-Long Form Improvisation Taught by Comedian Sharon Mannion this course involves making up scenes as you go along and helping one another to create a success story. It is a skilled used by most American comedians including Bill Murray, Tina Fay and Amy Poehler.  Sharon already teaches the popular Stand Up Comedy courses at the school which will return again this Autumn.

– Commedia dell’Arte (The Art of Clowning around!)  Taught by actor & director Ronan Dempsey, who trained at the prestigious Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, this series of masterclasses and intensive options is ideal for people interested in learning the importance of Commedia Dell’Arte in theatre today and exploring the primary emotions and states of tension that aid comic writing and characterisation. There is also a version of this available for Young People aged 14 – 19 years entitled ‘Physical Theatre Ensemble’.

In Cork, Musical Theatre for Adults has been added to the programme and is set to be taught by Lauren Ronan, musical director for the UCC Musical Society and UCC Singers.

The Young Gaiety Saturday School operates in Temple Bar, Navan, Bray, Malahide and Cork offering Drama, Performance & Musical Theatre (Temple Bar only) to children aged from a young as 18 month up until 18 years. Classes will commence on Saturday 27th September and run for 10 weeks.

There will be a host of TRY FOR FREE options available in advance of term for both Adults and Young People and the school is running an extensive range of free classes on Culture Night.
